The Round Cut or Brilliant Cut Diamond
Diamond Education: The Round or Brilliant Cut Diamond
The Round or Brilliant cut diamond is the most popular cut of diamonds.
The reason that the round shaped diamond has become so popular is because the round brilliant cut diamond offers the best fire and brilliance of the diamond.
Here are some facts for you.. Marcel Tolkwsky originally developed the round cut in 1919.
The modern round cut has 58 facets, cut into two pyramids base to base, which cut correctly show the brilliance and light dispersion, the fire, or the sparkle, that everyone looks for in a diamond.
Polish and symmetry are two important aspects of the cut.
The polish grade describes the smoothness of the diamond’s facets, and the symmetry grade refers to alignment of the facets.
With poor polish, the surface of a facet can be dulled, and may create blurred or dulled sparkle. It may constantly look like it needs to be cleaned.
With poor symmetry, light can be misdirected as it enters and exits the diamond.
